I bet a lot of you have already seen this clip before but I just saw it for the first time and definitely teared up a little. In it, Dustin Hoffman talks about playing the role of Dorothy in Tootsie and the pivotal moment that changed the way he viewed the film and his own attitude toward women.
It reminded me of something I recently read (although for the life of me I can’t remember where) that stated that as we go through our daily lives and meet new people, or interact with those we know, we should all try to give a person a lot more credit than we normally do. Think of someone as much smarter, more creative, more interesting, more kind than you normally would. The thinking goes that we often undermine people based on very quick judgments that we use and that if we take the time to think better of people, we may really be surprised by what we find.
I think we all can think of times when someone we met surprised us by being a lot more talented, skilled, or just more awesome than we thought they were, so why not think that everyone around us is full of this awesomeness and then try to search it out? It’s an exercise that requires some mental effort and practice but I think it’s worth it.
